What is the Law of Assumption, and How Can It Help Me Manifest My Dream Life?
We all have soul-level desires—those feelings deep down about what we want to create in our lives. Is it a family? A business? A work of art? A desire to travel, help others, or experience a love you’ve never seen but somehow hope could be possible?
The act of making that desire a reality is called manifesting, and it’s a creative, alchemical process that we are all already doing, even if most of us were never taught that we were born with it!
There are so many processes, advice, and theories out there about how to manifest, but today we are talking about our favorite: the Law of Assumption.
What is the Law of Assumption?
As the American metaphysical teacher and author Neville Goddard said, “The Law of Assumption is the law of all creation. Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled and see what that assumption does to you.”
The Law of Assumption works with the subconscious, and is based on the idea that our beliefs (aka assumptions!) create our reality. This is an ancient concept known by many names throughout the ages. While some of the most popular recent manifestation teachings have been around the Law of Attraction, the philosophy that positive thoughts bring positive results into a person's life, while negative thoughts bring negative outcomes, The Law of Assumption is different.
The Law of Assumption says that you don’t need to attract anything because everything you want already exists within your own consciousness. Instead of attracting things to you, you are “pushing out” (aka manifesting…making visible) what you are conscious of within you.
Neville Goddard's interpretation of the Law of Assumption is that your outer world is a manifestation of your self-concept (aka the story you believe about yourself, who you are/aren’t, what’s possible for you, etc.). Therefore the Law of Assumption works at the level of beliefs and that your conception of your self will determine your expression in life. Thus, if we believe or assume ourselves as the person having already achieved our desired goals (thus assuming the state of being and releasing any worries and doubt about the path to get there), then we will manifest that in our lives.
As Neville teaches us, “Consciously define yourself as that which you desire. Anything consciously claimed will manifest itself.”
How does the Law of Assumption work?
From the time we are born, we are inundated with programming in the form of messages about who we should be, what is valuable, and what is possible. Whether we know it or not, we internalize these messages as facts, and they become the building blocks of our worldview. Without knowing it, these beliefs shape our identities, thoughts, emotions, and actions.
The Law of Assumption posits that instead of being at the mercy of programmed beliefs (and thus must contort ourselves to fit to be accepted and successful), we can create our own reality of what is possible for us (or not).
Our beliefs, especially those embedded in our subconscious, play a vital role in this process. The subconscious mind is the powerhouse of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, operating beneath our conscious awareness. It holds the key to our deeply ingrained beliefs, and these beliefs heavily influence our experiences and perceptions of reality.
So, in order to successfully use the Law of Assumption in our favor, we must first understand the power of our beliefs (aka assumptions!). If we believe or assume something to be true, we are more likely to experience that reality. For example, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of 19 and had taken medication for 13 years. All doctors had said I would have to be on this medication for life. One day, I decided that I was going to heal my thyroid. I believed that doing a heavy metal detox would do the trick. I fully assumed this to be true and within 3 months my thyroid labs were completely normal. I even recommended this tactic to a family member struggling with hypothyroidism but it did not work because she did not truly believe it would. This was the Law of Assumption at work. I began embodying the assumption that my thyroid was normal and thus it became so!
In the spiritual world, there are still misconceptions that it’s only the most “high vibe,” pure, healed, or virtuous people whose desires or goals manifest. And yet, one look around proves that to be completely untrue. People of all types hit their goals and manifest their desires! There are plenty of immoral, exploitative, wounded people who achieve great success, money, and power. And yet, under the Law of Assumption, it makes sense—what these people have in common is that they believed they would be successful, so they were.
How to use the Law of Assumption.
Now that we understand the power of our beliefs (assumptions), we can begin to work with the Law of Assumption. Once we know what we desire, the first step is to ensure that our beliefs align with our desires and assuming the state of already having it. You can do this visually, through writing, meditating, hearing, smelling…whatever senses work best for you. This is the key to the Law of Assumption, as it helps us to create the state of being of already having achieved our goals.
However, it's important to note that the Law of Assumption goes beyond mere visualization and positive thinking. It requires a deep alignment between our conscious intentions and the subconscious beliefs we hold. This alignment is achieved by delving into the realm of the subconscious, identifying any limiting beliefs that contradict our desires, and actively working to reprogram them.
Another key to the Law of Assumption is persisting, which essentially means continuing to live as if our desire is already real until it becomes real. We can do this by taking time to visualize our desired goals and focus on the feeling of already having achieved them, dismissing negative or doubting thoughts, and reminding ourselves of what is possible. There is no need to obsess over your manifestation (in fact, doing that may tire you out and make the process feel like a chore). Instead, whenever a thought pops up that is in opposition to the assumption that you are manifesting, you can gently take a breath, come back into the expansive state of being of your desired reality so your attention realigns with the reality that you’re creating. After all, if you had a dinner reservation at 8pm, you wouldn’t entertain thoughts about what to make for dinner that night, even if it popped into your mind. You would say, “Oh, never mind! I’m going to think about what I want to order at the restaurant!” Then, you might begin to imagine how amazing it will feel to take a first bite of the meal!
Additionally, we do not have to know how everything will play out when we begin affirming, visualizing, and believing in the outcome. That is usually the first objection from our minds—that there is no way our desire can become real if we don’t know how it will happen!
In addition to visualizing our desired goals, we also take action. The Law of Assumption does not mean we can wait passively for our goals to manifest themselves magically. Instead, we must take action steps that will help us to make our desires a reality. And the “right” actions will arise naturally based on the subconscious beliefs you hold. When you do these things with the belief that you will be successful, the actions tend to flow from an intentional, easeful place.
By harnessing the power of the subconscious mind and aligning our beliefs and assumptions with our desires, we can unlock the true potential of the Law of Assumption and manifest the reality we truly desire. Remember, the biggest factor in this process is the subconscious mind—the gateway to our deepest beliefs and the key to unlocking our manifesting abilities.
What can help us reprogram our subconscious to align with our desires?
The Law of Assumption requires us to recognize our own power. Because we have the ability to create our own reality, and this power comes from within, we must learn to trust in ourselves and our own abilities. Once you understand the power of your subconscious to heal and manifest, it’s helpful to have a tool to practice leveraging it’s power!
Your subconscious is the creative force, and your conscious attention is what directs this energy.
